The announcement by Chairman Craig Heggaton that prominent Gnowangerup sheep and lamb producer Bill O’Keeffe would join the board of WA sheepmeats co-operative WAMMCO International, was made at the recent annual meeting of members at Katanning.
Mr O’Keeffe was elected unopposed to succeed Ms Kelly Manton Pearce, who retired after four years on the board. Mr Heggaton also paid tribute to the many achievements of Ms Manton Pearce during her time as a director.
Mr O’Keeffe believes WA farming generally faces an exciting future, with the sheep and lamb industry providing special focus.
“WAMMCO’s progressive investment in marketing and new processing technology and the positive signals they have been able to send to their producer members, are generating many new opportunities. I hope to assist in capitalising on those opportunities and in meeting future challenges,” he said.
The O’Keeffe family mate 4,500 ewes to Merino rams and another 2,500 Merino ewes to Poll Dorset sires on their Gnowangerup property, with another 1,500 flock of first cross ewes also mated to Poll Dorsets. The crossbred drop is spread over three separate lambing periods.
