WAMMCO's Katanning plant will be closed from Friday 24 July 2009 and for the month of August 2009. As has been discussed in general and through the media the plant will be undergoing a major redevelopment of its Lamb Boning Room which will bring it in to line with best international lamb processing practice. At the current time we are experiencing a very tight supply of livestock to our site and it is our intention to try and keep the site open until Friday 24 July 2009.  We are confident that the plant will be up and running to commence processing again on Monday 31st August 2009. Wammco has not closed for this length of time for many years but…
The fourth WAMMCO Producer of the Month win in four consecutive years, the fifth consecutive monthly win for the SAMM breed and a high WAMMCO Select bonus were highlights of the May title win for Mick and Todd Quinlivan of Quintarra Farms, Esperance. With about half of their winning consignment of 1203 SAMM lambs off green lucerne – courtesy good summer rains- and the balance off good cereal stubbles, Quintarra averaged $102.68 per head, with 25 lambs fetching between $142 and $161 each. This year’s average weight of 24.01 kg at $4.25 per kg compared with a bodyweight of 27.47 kg and $3.46 per kg to return $95.12 per head for the winning line of 667 lambs out of feedlot in June…

Katanning Cadet Bid

Thursday, 28 May 2009
WAMMCO International, one of Katanning’s largest employers, is looking at introducing a management cadet scheme to attract young people into the meat industry. The scheme is the brainchild of chief executive Coll MacRury, who took over from Des Griffiths on April 14. It would involve cadets learning about each department within processing.  Mr MacRury, who was previously in charge of major lamb and beef processors and exporters in New Zealand, believes there is a lack of young people working up through management chains in Australia and New Zealand.“We have to start working out how to take people through. I was fortunate enough to work in a big company and have a path to management,” Mr MacRury said.“Obviously, we need some…
A decision in 2002 to go for self-replacing SAMMS is paying handsome dividends for Warren and Tammy Garlick of  ‘Capolinga’ SAMMS Kondinin.A line of 150 fifth cross SAMM lambs from Capolinga went through Katanning at the end of April to win WAMMCO’s Producer of the Month title with an average return per 24.99 kg lamb of $115.49 and a WAMMCO Select bonus for red meat yield of $290.A top per kilo rate of $4.60 applied to 88 of the 150 lambs with 54 attracting the WAMMCO Select bonus and heavier individual lambs making up to $148.“We used to buy in ewes and mate them to Prime lamb rams  but found many problems with the system and decided to change the…
Keeping an interest in sheep is important for WAMMCO’s March 2009 Producer of the Month, Greg Cake of Gairdner River. Greg sees his first POM win as confirmation of progress for his prime lamb enterprise since introducing SAMM sires over his big framed, heavy wool cutting Merino ewes. However he has started using Dohne rams from Rex Parsons’ Jerramungup stud, instead of SAMMS to breed more Merino cross mothers.“We have some SAMM/Merino cross ewes for lamb breeding, but are now looking at the Dohnes to give us a good mother that will also produce higher quality wool,” he said. “We have been using Canowie Merino rams from local stud breeders Jason and Rod Griffiths for the past 12 years and…

Major Upgrade For WAMMCO

Tuesday, 28 April 2009
WAMMCO International has unveiled plans for a $5 million upgrade to its boning room which is expected to be completed in time for this year’s spring lamb flush. The upgrade will improve efficiencies and production, reduce overtime and result in 15 employees shifting from the boning room to value-adding.Features of the new room include robotic packaging input product into vacuum bags, doubling vacuum packing capacity from 35 cuts per minute to 70 and moving from band-saw to knifesaw technology.Three in-line weigh sorting machines will be installed as well as another PV350 autowrap machine, a new intralox conveyor system and french racks will be made using water instead of by hand.Boning room efficiencies will reduce WAMMCO’s costs by $2 to $3 a…

Industry Salutes Des Griffiths

Tuesday, 28 April 2009
Foundation directors of WAMMCO, former Agriculture Minister Monty House and his successor Terry Redman were amongst honoured guests of the Cooperative at the recent farewell in Perth for retiring CEO Des Griffiths on April 28.The foundation directors who were pictured with Des included (L to R) Graham Nixon, Max Cameron, Mark Bahen, current director Mick Quinlivan, current chairman Dawson Bradford, and Mike Norton.  With Des, they shared the task of addressing major early debts, rationalising surplus processing capacity and changing the WAMMCO ‘culture’ from high volume to high quality lamb production.“Des has been widely known for his honesty, integrity and fairness and will always be remembered for his dedication and contribution to the industry, “Dawson told guests at the dinner.Milestones…

More Wins For Rockdale SAMMS

Thursday, 12 March 2009
Intensifying their SAMM genetics helped Haydn and Mark Edwards of Rockdale Dumbleyung to win WAMMCO’s Producer of the Month title for February and also produced a handy WAMMCO Smart bonus.  Rockdale Prime SAMM stud also took out the prize for Grand Champion SAMM ram, which went on to be Supreme Grand Champion Sheep of all breeds at last week’s Wagin Woolorama. Winners of WAMMCO’s 2006 State Lamb competition, they delivered 112 lambs to Katanning to win Producer of the Month title on February 26, just before entries closed for the 2008 State competition. It was their first consignment since WAMMCO Select was launched last month and 62 lambs representing 55.4 percent of the draft, attracted bonuses totalling $335. “It is…
A bonus payment of $292.25 from WAMMCO Select boosted the winning returns for WAMMCO’s Producers of the Month for January, 2009, the Jensen family of “Uralla”, Pingaring. Previous Producers of the Month for April 2005, the family won the January 2009 award with a line of 124 first cross Merino/Prime SAMM lambs averaging 23.4 kg over the scales to return $101.37 per head.  WAMMCO’s Producer of the Month is now determined under a new set of criteria, based on the highest percentage of WAMMCO Select lambs in a consignment of more than 100 crossbred lambs. A further criteria is that the consignment must be heavier than 22 kg hot carcase weight. The winning ’Uralla’ draft included 60 lambs – or…

Staying With Sheep

Friday, 30 January 2009
A transition that has seen about half of a 6000 ewe flock switched over the past few years from wool to prime lambs for processing and live export, is set to continue for WAMMCO’s Producer of the Month winners for December 2008, Richard and David Turner of “Tone Park”, Tone Bridge in the Shire of  Boyup Brook. Richard said last week that the decline of the wool industry was a major factor in the loss of about 60 percent of the farms in his area to bluegums, - at enormous cost to the community and local infrastructure. He and wife Helen are critical of the tax incentives available to foresters but not to farmers.  “We see the prime lamb and…
