Chairman's Corner

Wednesday, 12 January 2005
I recently had the privilege of attending the Australian Exporter of the Year Awards held in Broadbeach, Queensland.  WAMMCO had been nominated as a finalist in the Agribusiness section of the awards having previously won the Western Australian section of the same awards.  Although we were unsuccessful I believe we benefited tremendously from the exposure and experience.  The winner of this section was Cassella Wines from NSW, who went on to become the overall Australian Exporter of the year.  I believe the fact that we got as far as we did against some pretty strong competition is another indicator of how far your Co-operative has come. Although next season may seem a long time away I remind members to give…

Kojonup Winner for November Award

Tuesday, 21 December 2004
Poll Dorset/Merino lamb producer George Pearce of “Merrivale” Kojonup, has won WAMMCO’s Producer of the Month award for November with a line of 167 lambs that averaged $91.98 per head. George turns off  up to 850 prime lambs a year, mostly under contract to WAMMCO. His line of 167 lambs were processed by WAMMCO at Katanning on November 2,  with nearly 70 percent achieving the top $3.20 per kg  indexed price on the day for premium category 22- 28 kg, fat score 2 and 3 lamb. His lambs are produced from Poll Dorset rams bred by his daughter Felicity using genes from Eric and Ron Wright’s ‘Pine Avenue’ stud at Kojonup, and from George’s ‘East Strathglen’ blood, Merino mothers. The…

October "Producer of the Month"

Thursday, 11 November 2004
Hyden producers Tom, Donna and Gerard Lynch took the $100 "WAMMCO Producer of the Month" award for October, with a line of 185 Merino/Poll Dorset cross lambs with an average weight of 23.7 kg. The lambs were processed at Katanning on October 15, averaging $87.50 per head under a WAMMCO supply contract. The winning lambs scored 457 points on the judging grid used for the monthly contest. Tom Lynch said low wool returns were responsible for the family shift into prime lamb production about six years ago. Poll Dorset rams are used over cfa Merino ewes from the home flock, or purchased Merino ewes, to produce about 800 prime lambs each year. The lamb enterprise is run on “Limeric” a…

Katanning Farewell

Monday, 08 November 2004
A pioneering couple responsible for assisting many Christmas Island families to take up new lives in Katanning, was recently farewelled by WAMMCO staff. Butler Bin Ezen and his wife, Rokiah Ali came to Katanning in 1975, when Butler was the second Christmas Islander to take up work at the original Southern Meat Packers plant soon after it opened. Butler was a maintenance worker and Rokiah  worked continuously as a trimmer on the slaughter floor. Katanning manager Tony Bessell said the growth of the Christmas Island community in Katanning due to the efforts of Butler and others, had been synonymous with the history of the town and the processing plant. “More than half our staff originate from Christmas Island and their…

Live Sheep Myths

Friday, 05 November 2004
WAMMCO Chief Executive Des Griffiths has warned producers the processing industry would be unable to handle the current numbers shipped live if the live sheep export trade was shut down. He was responding to a question from former WAMMCO director Mike Norton on the Cooperative’s policy on the live sheep export trade at the recent annual meeting of members at Katanning. “Despite claims that we should be exporting processed sheepmeats instead of sending animals live on boats, the reality is that there is  no longer the processing capacity in WA to handle the large number of sheep now going for live export,” Des said. “It would probably take between one and two years to bring the processing industry up to…

WAMMCO AGM confirms $1.8M profit figure

Wednesday, 03 November 2004
At last weeks WAMMCO Annual General Meeting, Chairman Dawson Bradford confirmed a $1.8 million profit for the Cooperative, and pledged further plant upgrades and increasing market promotion, particularly in the US to ensure stability as WA lamb production increased. He pointed to average producer returns of  $73.96 per head despite a hike in the Australian dollar to nearly 80c/US, stating that this performance had been achieved through increased efficiency and more value adding of product to win more market share in the US. Another $15 million would be spent at Katanning over the next five years continuing on from the $2.3 million freezer complex currently under construction. Dawson said the WAMMCO board had a key role to play in working…
WA Lamb processing co-operative WAMMCO International has taken out the Agribusiness Export Award at the 2004 Western Australian Industry and Exporter of the Year Award. WAMMCO Chairman Dawson Bradford accepted the award at a gala ceremony at the Perth Convention Centre on Friday October 22. Speaking at the ceremony Mr Bradford was delighted the co-operative had received recognition for a solid year of performance, in particular with expansion of sales into the premium US market. “WA producers have responded to the call for heavier lambs and a consistent supply 12 months of the year allowing WAMMCO to build important supply relationships with major US retailers” Mr Bradford said. “Producers are now benefiting from increased returns”. WAMMCO is a farmer owned…
Chris Squiers of  Shirlee Downs Poll Dorset Stud Quairading, capped a prizewinning seven days last week when he was named WAMMCO’s inaugural producer of the month for September.  The stud also won a number of championship ribbons and topped the annual sale at the Perth Royal Show. The new WAMMCO award is based on the same grid system used for the WAMMCO-Katanning Agricultural Society statewide lamb competition. It is open only to members of the cooperative submitting consignments of 100 lambs or more in any month, and whereas the prize is a modest $100, the monthly contest is expected to generate keen producer interest. Chris Squiers who farms with partner Fay and sons Adrian and Sascha, started breeding Dorset Horn…

All are welcome and refreshments will be provided.  Please RSVP to Odetta or Judy on 9821-2000 by October 22, 2004.

WAMMCO Nominated for WA Export Awards
