Win Confirms SAMM Versatility

Thursday, 25 February 2010
Quintarra Farms, Esperance notched up their fifth annual WAMMCO Producer of the Month title early this year with a January consignment of SAMM lambs from a different environment.Todd Quinlivan said previous SAMM winners had come off lucerne and other rations usually in May or June, from properties near Esperance. The winning consignment of 101 lambs for January 2010 were from a mainly cropping property at Scaddan/Grasspatch. They were from a flock of 400 SAMM cross ewes and were dropped on the property in May/June 2009 and finished on barley stubbles.“The lambs were a tribute to our Scaddan farm overseer Gavin Millard who was keen to test SAMMS in a mallee/cropping environment,” Todd said.He said lambs in the consignment were second and…
A collaboration between industry, government, processors, universities and Meat & Livestock Australia was brought to fruition today (Tuesday, January 19), with the ministerial launch of LambEx 2010 – a national lamb industry event to drive the future profitability of the industry. WA Minister for Agriculture & Food, Forestry Terry Redman joined senior representatives of the lamb, processing and live export sectors to inspire confidence in the future of the Australian lamb industry via a large scale industry showcase at Burswood from August 4-6 this year. The Ministerial support of the initiative was been welcomed by LambEx chair and project initiator Dawson Bradford, of Hillcroft Farms, Narrogin. “Our vision for LambEx is that it must bring together every sector that has capacity…

Lamb Outpaces Beef at Denmark

Monday, 18 January 2010
Producers of the Month, Don and Georgie Nekel Cutting their cattle numbers to produce more lambs was something of a test for Denmark farmers Don and Georgie Nekel when they made the move two years ago.Their judgement was rewardedin December when a consignment of 151 Poll Dorset/Merino cross lambs lambs averaged 22.65 kg andreturned $97.15 per head to win WAMMCO’s Producer of the Month title for December. The Nekels suffered repeated outbreaks of footrot, and coped with foxes and the extra sheep problems of a high rainfall area during the 1980’s and 90’s, being forced to rebuild their sheep flock several times from scratch.“Despite our problems with sheep, Donwas impressed with theprime lamb and sheep price trends and we decided to…
A big thunderstorm at the end of February and sound Merino/Poll Dorset genetics helped prime lamb newcomers Charlie and Sue Joyce of Castlak Farms Kukerin, to win Wammco’s November Producer of the Month title. The rainstorm supplied a green pick for the mid-March drop of lambs through to June on the Joyce family’s Moulyinning property ‘Strathalbyn’ and confirmed the wisdom of their decision the previous year to develop a prime lamb enterpriseA line of 143 Merino/Poll Dorset cross lambs from ‘Strathablyn’ averaged 22.41 kilograms and $3.84 per kilo to return $86.03 per head to win the November title.WAMMCO Select added another $4 per head to 48 lambs in the consignment for a bonus of $203.75.A later draft of 108 lambs processed…

Kukerin Lambs Win October POM Title

Monday, 23 November 2009
Dumbleyung winner, Jon Ward A good score in WAMMCO Select assisted Jon and Terry Ward of ‘Yaudling’ Dumbleyung to win WAMMCO’s Producer of the Month title for October.Their winning consignment consisted of 261 lambs with an average carcase weight of 22.49 kilograms and a value per kilogram of $4.51, returning $102.89 per head including skin.Twelve percent, or 33 lambs in the draft qualified for WAMMCO Select, attracting a bonus payment of $169.81. 168 lambs in the draft returned more than $100 per head with two of the heaviest lambs clocked at $123.75 each.Jon Ward said his father’s traditional interest in Collinsville Merinos (up to 6,000 sheep at one point) laid the foundation for the family’s lamb operation.“About ten years ago…
WAMMCO’s new CEO Coll MacRury sees his initial role with the cooperative as addressing Western Australia’s declining sheep flock and keeping WAMMCO at the ‘cutting edge’ of lamb processing technology and marketing. “I am here initially, to take stock, to keep things tight and to work with the WAMMCO team to ensure completion of the $5 million boning upgrade at Katanning  in time for this year’s spring lamb flush.” “However I believe the WAMMCO model is a highly successful one, with significant scope for future expansion,” he said this week. Mr MacRury took over from Des Griffiths as WAMMCO CEO on April 14. He was previously in charge of major lamb and beef processors and exporters in New Zealand. He…

Coolalees in WAMMCO Spotlight

Monday, 12 October 2009
WA’s only Coolalee prime lamb stud has ended a record-breaking run of six consecutive wins by SAMM breeders for WAMMCO’s Producer of the Month award. Ron and Erica Russell’s Pingamup Creek Coolalee stud at Jerramungup: • Won WAMMCO’s September award with an average $115.44 per head or $4.56 per kilogram for 154 lambs processed at Katanning on September 9• Scored a WAMMCO Select premium of $343.12 on 38.96 of the lambs in the draft• Supplied lambs with an average weight of 24.76 kg as some of the very first to be processed in the new $5.5 million boning room at Katanning when it opened early in September. Ron Russell said this week that the POM win for September defied one…

High Score With WAMMCO Select

Friday, 14 August 2009
A decision to cross their AMS ewes with SAMM rams five years ago is helping Pithara farmers and WAMMCO’s July Producer of the Month title winners, Hedley and June Falls towards a truly sustainable farming enterprise. The couple have retained enough hectares to feed and run a flock of 500 SAMM-dominant ewes. “We decided to try farming for a profit, rather than borrowing money to farm through droughts,” Hedley said this week. Their draft of 140 SAMM lambs achieved the highest WAMMCO Select percentage of 62.1% (87 lambs) yet recorded for a POM winner, and resulted in a bonus payment of $499.17, or an extra $3.60 per lamb over the consignment. The lambs averaged 22.10 kilograms and earned $5.20 per…
Merino ewes retain pride of place at Joe and Louie Hughes’ “Ulinga “ property at Jerdacuttup despite an increasing emphasis on cropping and a dominant prime lamb production program that won WAMMCO’s June Producer of the Month title.“We are down from a peak number of ewes in the late 1980’s to a current all-Merino ewe flock of 3,000,” Louie said last week. “About two thirds of these ewes are mated to Suffolk and White Suffolk, Poll Dorset and Texel sires, and we use our own Ulinga Merino rams over the rest.”Joe Hughes has been a long term breeder of sheep and Louie believes some farmers will return to sheepbreeding if prices remain high, because of the extra security they offer…
WAMMCO's Katanning plant will be closed from Friday 24 July 2009 and for the month of August 2009. As has been discussed in general and through the media the plant will be undergoing a major redevelopment of its Lamb Boning Room which will bring it in to line with best international lamb processing practice. At the current time we are experiencing a very tight supply of livestock to our site and it is our intention to try and keep the site open until Friday 24 July 2009.  We are confident that the plant will be up and running to commence processing again on Monday 31st August 2009. Wammco has not closed for this length of time for many years but…
