WAMMCO International, one of
Katanning’s largest employers, is looking at introducing a management
cadet scheme to attract young people into the meat industry.
The
scheme is the brainchild of chief executive Coll MacRury, who took over
from Des Griffiths on April 14. It would involve cadets learning about
each department within processing. Mr MacRury, who was previously in
charge of major lamb and beef processors and exporters in New Zealand,
believes there is a lack of young people working up through management
chains in Australia and New Zealand.
“We have to start working
out how to take people through. I was fortunate enough to work in a big
company and have a path to management,” Mr MacRury said.
“Obviously,
we need some good calibre people and a good training program for young
people who want to make a living in agricultural towns,” he said. “The
sorts of people we need to tap into are those who want to make a career
in the meat industry.”
