Mick and Todd Quinlivan and their Quintarra SAMMS have kept Esperance on the map ‘lambwise’ this year despite a dry windy season, by winning their second consecutive WAMMCO June Producer of the Month title and their third title in four years.

Mick this week credited SAMM genetics and a Lamplan breeding strategy tuned to WAMMCO’s heavy lamb export markets with the latest June title win for Quintarra  Farms.

“We are getting remarkably few score 5’s, 4’s and 1’s over a large production program,” he said.

The winning draft of 667 lambs processed at Katanning on June 12 produced more than 78 percent of lambs in the score 2 and 3 categories.

They averaged 27.47 kg and were purchased by WAMMCO for $3.46 per kg to return an average of $95.12 per head.

An average  skin value of $5.11 took the total return per head to $100.23.

At the top end of the range on $3.60 per kilogram were 106 lambs at an average weight of 29 kg which returned $104.40 per head  and another 76 lambs all weighing over 30 kg that returned more than $111 per head.

“These prices were net of skins and because we deal direct with WAMMCO, we can usually add on another ten percent for rebates and savings on commission,” Mick said.

He said Esperance had taken its ‘turn’ of poor seasons this year, with high winds compounding the lack of rain. However good rains over most of the region last weekend had taken off some of the pressure.
