The Lynch family of Hyden who won WAMMCO’s second Producer of the Month title in October 2004, have returned to take out the award for September 2006 with a line of 251 Merino/Poll Dorset lambs averaging 25.09 kg for a contract per head price of $88.97. The October 2004 entry of 185 lambs from Tom, Donna and Gerard Lynch weighed in at 23.7 kg and averaged $87.50 per head. Tom said a decision to shear his lambs in mid-August assisted in getting the 2006 lambs into the premium weight categories with an average of weight of 25.09 kg. “We got only 20 cents per skin from WAMMCO, but we expect the sale of lambswool to recoup our shearing costs and the extra-weight benefits were obvious,” he said. “Our season has not been too bad considering we missed out on early summer rains and have had reasonable rains only since Easter. The lambs were on lighter land on our property north of Hyden and the ryegrass/clover pastures there fared better than on the heavier soils on the home property.” “We have a small feedlot system, but these lambs were off the paddock.” Tom said the family was continuing to buy rams from the Jasper’s Julmar stud at Cunderdin but was targetting rams above 180 on the carcase index and was closely watching other factors such as eye muscle depth. “We can see from Viascan that some lambs are more valuable than others and we know that with prime lambs the money is for meat, nothing else.” Nearly 96 percent of this year’s winning draft of 251 lambs were in WAMMCO’s premium classes of minimum 22 kg, fat score 2 & 3. |
