Kondinin Lambs Win March Award PDF Print E-mail

altA draft of 102 SAMM cross lambs won WAMMCO’s March Producer of the Month and an extra prize from Farmworks for Stewart and Heather Garlick of “Killawarra,” Kondinin.

Stewart began developing an interest in SAMMS  with his brother Warren before taking over Killawarra from his father three years ago. Warren runs the successful Capolinga SAMM stud, from which Stewart selects his rams.

Stewart said the award winning lambs came off lupin stubbles showing the benefits of  green picks from frequent summer rains.

They averaged $3.26 per kg on WAMMCO’s daily weight and grade schedule, with more than 78 percent achieving the premium 22-28 kg range for a per head average of $85.76.

The lambs were shorn just prior to delivery, with the wool awaiting sale. An extra crutching of both lambs and mothers was needed this year to deal with a heavy blowfly problem.

Stewart said he is steadily increasing his breeding flock from around 800 first and second cross SAMM ewes. The winning line consisted of second and third cross SAMM lambs.

Later lambs are currently in a small feedlot, on rations to reach WAMMCO’s premium weight.

“All of our lambs go to the cooperative,” he said. “I just wish we had a few more of them.”
