Well known Newdegate lamb producer Ian Quartermaine has won  WAMMCO’s September Producer of the Month title with an exceptional line of  114 Coolalee, Merino cross lamb carcases averaging 25.86 kg.

Seventy nine percent of the consignment scored the premium  22 – 28 kg, fat score 2 and 3 category to achieve the top contract rate of  $3.20 per kg, whilst overall the 114 lambs averaged $3.17 for a value per head of $82.03.

Ian was second place-getter in WAMMCO’s 2004 State lamb competition and has been using Coolalee rams from Ron and Erica Russell’s Pingamup Creek stud at Jerramungup almost since they started making their rams available.

“The breed is ideally suited to our environment with easier lambing and an ability to reach the heavier weight grades without excess fat. The rams are also highly user-friendly,” he said.

The winning consignment was one of two processed at Katanning for Ian on September 29. He said there were heavier lambs dressing out at more than 30 kg in the other consignment.

He will despatch nearly 3000 Coolalee cross rams to WAMMCO this season and says he will also have some excellent SAMM cross lambs for later delivery following the bumper pasture year at Newdegate.
