Poll Dorset/Merino lamb producer George Pearce of “Merrivale” Kojonup, has won WAMMCO’s Producer of the Month award for November with a line of 167 lambs that averaged $91.98 per head. George turns off up to 850 prime lambs a year, mostly under contract to WAMMCO. His line of 167 lambs were processed by WAMMCO at Katanning on November 2, with nearly 70 percent achieving the top $3.20 per kg indexed price on the day for premium category 22- 28 kg, fat score 2 and 3 lamb. His lambs are produced from Poll Dorset rams bred by his daughter Felicity using genes from Eric and Ron Wright’s ‘Pine Avenue’ stud at Kojonup, and from George’s ‘East Strathglen’ blood, Merino mothers. The line was turned straight off clover/perennial ryegrass pastures and George was pleased with the weights achieved, in view of the tight seasonal conditions. He estimated that his returns from lamb in 2004 had averaged nearly $70 per head over about 830 lambs. |
